I Don’t Think We’re in Kansas Anymore…

Yesterday we arrived at ITEC by taking a short boat ride to Isla Colon.  From there we got orientated and settled into our cabins.  Many students were worried about the lack of warm water, and functional Wi-Fi in the cabins, but over time we’ve adapted.  We had a quick lecture after dinner about different types of forests taught by Pete Lahanas Director of ITEC.  Most people then returned to their cabins except for a few who went to the library to read a controversial book about intelligence aloud. After what was a good night’s sleep for some of us, we awoke to go snorkeling in a coral reef.  Many of us were excited to explore a new environment we’re not used to.  Following lunch, we went exploring in the forest with the Pete who explained many reasons for animal behavior and for the environment being in the condition it is. for example, Pete showed us some poison dart frogs of which we got to safely hold as we learned about their behavior.  We also stumbled upon a tree, which bore fruits with an oxidizing ink and Pete explained that we could use the ink in the fruits to make tattoos which some of us plan to do tomorrow. Tonight, we were encouraged to start formulating questions for our projects and we have many insights and ideas for the next few days we are here for.

The Wi-Fi is very limited here. Photo uploads will be limited for the time being.
